Bosch designs complete engine management systems from the fuel pump all the way to the Oxygen Sensors and everything in between, who better to understand the requirements of engine management components than the people who design the systems.
The function of the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) is to control all the actuators in the engine management system to obtain optimum engine operation in terms of fuel consumption, performance, exhaust gas emissions and driving smoothness.
The main job of the engine management system is to ensure that the engine develops the torque demanded by the driver, while at the same time keeping fuel consumption down and ensuring minimum emissions. The later engine management systems combine all subsystems involved. The electronic throttle control adjusts the correct air quantity for this engine torque. The gasoline injection subsystem injects the appropriate fuel mass, and the ignition subsystem provides the necessary spark energy at precisely the right moment in time.
The engine management system increases not only the driving comfort but also the safety for the occupants. For instance, if the ABS or ESP (Electronic Stability Program) system demands a particular engine torque in order to ensure efficient vehicle traction, this torque is adjusted by the engine management system.
The intelligence of the engine management system is ever expanding and the information provided by vehicle sensors is of a higher quality and on a more timely basis. This allows the engine management system to have a self diagnosis capacity in order to monitor vehicle status. The engine management system monitors, amongst other things; the Fuel System, the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system, the Purge System, the catalyst, misfire, and Oxygen Sensor. A properly operating Oxygen Sensor has become one the most important components for the engine management system, in terms of emissions compliance.
