This was Russell Ingall’s home race, the Clipsal 500 held on
the streets of Adelaide.
After a disappointing race one qualifying result of 22nd
he moved to 5th overall. Unfortunately, contact while trying to pass fellow
Holden driver Fabian Coulthard resulted in a puncture of the front right tyre and
Ingall speared off the road at Turn 14, careering heavily into the tyre wall.
The dedicated team at Paul Morris Motorsports worked
until 2am Sunday morning to restore car for race two on Sunday. Ingall
started 14th on the grid which had been dampened with a light drizzle of rain. The
rain soon turned torrential and it was a struggle to race on the tyres in the
heavier conditions.
Several safety cars altered strategies but the team had
Ingall up to 12th before a black flag drive-thru penalty for a pit-stop infringement
shattered any hopes of a top-10 result. The infringement was for running
over a spare wheel nut, which became dislodged from the fuel boom.
The race ended with Ingall in 16th.
